Mixing Drums: How to get huge punchy drums

Are you trying to get that huge drum sound but over-compression is destroying your dynamics? Chris has got a little trick for you to try out! 🔥🎚️

1. Route your drums to two separate busses.

2. Add a compressor to each bus.

3. On the first bus add light or minimal compression with a slow attack and a fast release.

4. On the second bus add heavy compression using a fast attack and a slow release.

5. Blend the two to taste.

This trick will make your drums sound huge whilst also retaining the natural transients and dynamics of the original drum part. Who else loves a bit of parallel compression in their drum mix?!
